Improving Athletics

Athletics are a rich and vibrant part of each campuses life, yet each campus expresses that differently. As the district considers equity of access, it must consider compliance with Title 9 mandating equity between genders. In several instances, campus size at the high schools are simply not large enough to support all the athletic programs needed at campuses.

Aging Infrastructure

Also, aging infrastructure plays a role in these facilities as well. As the district continues to grow these rich athletic programs, special cases have to be targeted to optimize equity, continue to restore aging facilities, and also meet the Board’s goal of expanding opportunities for students in the district.

In some instances, gymnasiums and other athletic facilities have been identified for full replacement. This is either in an effort to optimize space (as is shown in Newport Harbor High School) or to replace gymnasiums that will be cost prohibitive to retrofit (such as Costa Mesa High School). As replacements of structures are provided at the campuses, the district will need to carefully navigate both the mandates of Title 9 and providing equity between campuses.
